What this means in real life

A scooter, manual chair and rehabilitation power wheelchair solve different problems. A scooter can conserve energy and offer independent driving for someone with adequate trunk control and transfers, but it usually has limited seating support, pressure relief and powered positioning. A manual chair is light and transportable, but self-propelling is often unrealistic in DMD and caregiver pushing can become the default. A complex power chair can provide customized seating, tilt, recline, seat elevation, leg positioning and alternative controls, but it requires evaluation, funding, training and suitable home/vehicle access.

The decision should begin with activities and body support: distance, fatigue, falls, pain, posture, transfers, pressure risk, school access, independence and future growth. A scooter may be a useful secondary device yet become inadequate as a primary system. Buying a retail mobility product before a seating evaluation can make insurance funding for the medically appropriate chair harder and may leave the child unsupported.

Ask a Duchenne-experienced PT/OT and seating clinic to compare options in real environments. Trial driving and positioning, measure doorways and vehicles, and include the userโ€™s preferences. Powered mobility is an energy-conservation and independence tool; it does not mean giving up walking.
